Russian gas transportation through Kazakhstan to Uzbekistan is projected to increase significantly in 2024, reaching 3.8 bn cubic meters compared to 1.28 bn cubic meters in 2023. This surge follows an agreement on strategic cooperation between Gazprom and the government of Kazakhstan, as it was disclosed by TASS on March 27.
The agreement stipulates the increase in annual gas transportation volume from Russia to Uzbekistan. The transit route through Kazakhstan was inaugurated on October 7, 2023, with the respective presidents of Russia, Uzbekistan, and Kazakhstan attending the ceremony.
Uzbekistan is poised to boost its imports of Russian gas substantially, in line with an agreement between UzGasTrade and Gazprom. The deal stipulates daily supplies of 9 mn cubic meters, totaling 2.8 bn cubic meters annually, with an estimated cost of $448 mn, translating to $160 per 1,000 cubic meters of gas, according to Kommersant.
This increase in imports is part of Uzbekistan's strategic efforts to address its growing energy demands. Plans include the modernization of the main gas system with a $500 mn investment to enhance gas import capacity, particularly from the north, where Uzbekistan currently receives Russian gas. The volume of supplies is expected to rise from 9 to 32 mn cubic meters per day, indicating a significant expansion in gas import infrastructure.
