Uzbekistan and Kazakhstan have reached an agreement to install meters at each other's locations to accurately measure the volume of water consumed by both countries, as per to a report from the press service of the Ministry of Water Resources and Irrigation of Kazakhstan, on March 19.
This initiative aims to facilitate the exchange of information about mutual water consumption in real-time. Currently, experts from both countries are in discussions to determine the precise locations for installing these water meters. Additionally, negotiations are underway with international organizations to engage them in the project.
Previously, transboundary gauging stations named "Patar" and "Sarvak" were installed along the Northern and Greater Fergana Canals on the border between Uzbekistan and Tajikistan. These stations are instrumental in providing more accurate measurements of water flow for irrigation purposes. While water consumption by both countries has been measured in the border area previously, the existing equipment is outdated. With the support of the Blue Peace Central Asia initiative of the Swiss government, these gauging stations have been updated to enhance efficiency and accuracy.
Kazakhstan expressed its intention in 2023 to revise the agreement on the utilization of water and energy resources in the Syrdarya River basin with Uzbekistan and Kyrgyzstan. Kazakhstan cited concerns about the ecological condition of the river, attributing it to pollutants originating from Uzbekistan.
