Uzbekistan joins 'Equal Future' launch for gender equality in Europe and Central Asia

In a concerted effort to advance gender equality across Europe and Central Asia, leaders and experts convened in a virtual conference to mark the launch of the "Equal Future" online platform, facilitated by the European and Central Asia Regional Office of the United Nations Development Program (UNDP), Senate of the Oliy Majlis reported.

The event drew the participation of prominent figures including Tanzila Narbayeva, Chairperson of the Senate of the Oliy Majlis, and Ivana Zivkovic, Assistant Secretary General of the UN and director of the European and CIS Regional Office of UNDP.

The "Equal Future" platform, initiated by the UNDP Istanbul Regional Center in 2020, aims to provide essential resources and support in the realm of gender equality to governmental bodies, parliamentarians, and civil society organizations across 19 nations in Europe and Central Asia. Functioning as an online knowledge hub, the platform focuses on promoting women's participation in public administration, crucial for fostering inclusive governance structures.

Narbayeva underscored the paramount importance of gender policies in societal and national development, emphasizing that fostering gender equality is not merely a matter of morality but also an imperative for sustainable progress. She highlighted the comprehensive measures underway in Uzbekistan to bolster support for women across various sectors, facilitating their active engagement in socio-political and socio-economic spheres while also advancing regional cooperation on gender equality initiatives.

Participants of the event hailed the "Equal Future" platform as a pivotal instrument for orchestrating dialogues, conducting training sessions, and facilitating collaborative efforts to address gender disparities. The platform serves as an invaluable arena for exchanging insights, experiences, and best practices in gender equality advocacy across Europe and Central Asia.

    Gender Equality in Uzbekistan

The United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) recognizes the pivotal role of women's equal participation in decision-making processes, equitable compensation for their work, fair distribution of unpaid care and household responsibilities, and access to healthcare tailored to their specific needs. UNODC staunchly advocates for the eradication of all forms of violence against women and girls, affirming its commitment to integrating a gender perspective actively and visibly across all its operations, policies, and initiatives.

Ghada Waly, the Executive Director of UNODC, emphasized Uzbekistan's significant strides in implementing crucial reforms within the realms outlined by UNODC's mandates. Whether in border management, law enforcement, criminal justice, healthcare, education, or the fight against corruption, the efficacy of these reforms hinges on the inclusive involvement of women in their conception and execution, on equal terms with men. Waly stressed the necessity of considering women's rights and requirements at every stage, given the disparate impacts of drugs, crime, corruption, and terrorism on women and men.

“Women’s rights and needs must be taken into account, every step of the way, as women and men are impacted differently by drugs, crime, corruption, and terrorism”, Ghada Waly, the UNODC Executive Director voiced.”

The Government of Uzbekistan underscored its commitment to gender equality by enacting the "Guarantees of Equal Rights and Opportunities for Women and Men" law in 2019, signaling a resolute stance against gender-based discrimination and affirming equal rights for all genders. Narbaeva highlighted Uzbekistan's adherence to key international conventions aimed at safeguarding women from discrimination across legal, social, and economic spheres. She also emphasized the adoption of the "Strategy for Achieving Gender Equality in Uzbekistan until 2030" as a pivotal step towards advancing gender parity and inclusivity within the nation.

“Our country joined all main international conventions, ensuring legal, social, and economic protection of women from any form of discrimination. The Strategy for Achieving Gender Equality in Uzbekistan until 2030 was adopted”, Narbaeva, emphasized.
