The international non-profit organization Open Data Watch released the findings of its "Gender Data Compass 2023" rating, shedding light on the availability and transparency of gender-related data worldwide. Among the countries assessed, Uzbekistan emerged with a total score of 37 points, securing the 56th position out of 185 nations evaluated and ranking third in Central Asia.
In contrast, neighboring Kazakhstan achieved the fourth position globally, attaining a total score of 60 points and ranking as the top country in Central Asia. Meanwhile, Kyrgyzstan secured the 45th spot. Leading the rankings were the United Arab Emirates, the Republic of Korea, and Denmark. Tajikistan obtained a total score of 17 points, positioning itself at the 159th place out of 185 countries evaluated and ranking fourth in Central Asia. Similarly, Turkmenistan obtained a total score of 13 points, placing it at the 171st position out of 185 nations assessed and ranking fifth in Central Asia.
The evaluation process scrutinizes countries across five key criteria: data access, openness, fundamentals, opportunities, and financing. Notably, Uzbekistan received the lowest score in terms of financing, highlighting a crucial area for improvement. According to Open Data Watch, adequate funding is paramount for sustaining gender data systems, as it facilitates the collection, analysis, dissemination, and utilization of pertinent gender-related information.
Offering recommendations to enhance Uzbekistan's gender data ranking, the organization emphasized the need for increased publication of gender-related data to address existing gaps. Out of the 53 indicators evaluated in the Gender Data Compass (GDC), 10 were found to be absent from any government website or portal. Furthermore, 14 published statistics lacked gender disaggregation, undermining efforts to tackle gender inequality effectively. Gender-disaggregated data is instrumental in informing evidence-based gender policies aimed at enhancing the well-being of individuals across all genders.
In Uzbekistan, the Statistics Agency serves as the authorized body responsible for maintaining gender statistics.
