Brussels forum centers on strategic role of Central Asian middle corridor
Against the backdrop of shifting geopolitical dynamics and challenges in traditional trade routes, the ongoing Investor Forum in Brussels has emerged as a crucial platform for high-ranking representatives from Central Asian countries, the European Union, and partner nations of the Trans-Caspian Transport Corridor. The event has garnered attention from influential figures, including Oybek Shaykhov, the Secretary General of EUROUZ, who emphasized its significance in fostering ties between Europe and Uzbekistan, Daryo correspondent reported on January 29.
Shaykhov underscored the increasing complexities faced by global transport companies in moving goods from China to Europe. Traditional routes, once accessible and cost-effective, are now fraught with challenges, rendering them either unavailable or financially burdensome. In this evolving geopolitical landscape, Shaykhov highlighted the strategic importance of the middle corridor through Central Asia, particularly in the context of facilitating trade between China and Europe.
Shaykhov drew attention to the pivotal role played by the middle corridor through Central Asia, emphasizing its absolute centrality in the contemporary global trade landscape. He referenced the remarks of the High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs, Borell, who declared that Central Asia is now at the center of the world. Over the past five years, the middle corridor has evolved into a key player, gaining strategic importance in the facilitation of efficient and cost-effective trade.
Expressing optimism, Shaykhov expressed hope that the European side would recognize the critical need to allocate sufficient attention and investment to support Uzbekistan's endeavors in developing and maintaining this vital trade corridor.
Earlier Daryo reported that the EIB Global foresees the mobilization of an extra €3 bn for connectivity initiatives in Central Asia. This financial investment aims to promote smooth connectivity between Central Asia and the EU, strengthening economic relationships and establishing a sturdy groundwork for implementing the EU-Central Asia and Global Gateway strategies.
