The Ministry of Energy and Water (MoEW), Abdul Latif Mansoor, announced plans to construct nearly 100 small dams to strengthen the underground water and prevent vulnerability to drought in Afghanistan, TOLO News reported.
Dams inaugurated and under construction
Mansoor stated that several dams have already been inaugurated and more are under construction.
Farmers express concern over water shortage
On the other hand, several farmers expressed their concerns about the lack of water, which has made it impossible for them to continue farming. They believe that the reduction of water and consecutive droughts has led to an increase in the unemployment rate in the country.
Mohammad Sarwar, a farmer, said, “Since the past three years, drought has put a lot of pressure on the people, especially in the farming of potato and wheat.” Another farmer, Jumma Khan, added, “The land does not grow anything, in these years, people have become vulnerable and they suffered a lot.”
Addressing water shortage
The acting Minister assured that the construction of these projects will address the lack of water. Before this, the Ministry of Rural Rehabilitation and Development announced the commencement of projects involving small dams in 13 provinces.
