Magadan Mayor Yury Grishan has taken a decision to cancel all official New Year's celebrations in Belgorod following a tragic incident that claimed the lives of numerous people, BBC Russian reports.
In a message conveyed through his Telegram channel, Mayor Grishan expressed deep condolences to the families and loved ones affected by the recent shelling in Belgorod. He stated, "Dear Magadan residents, I'm sure everyone is following the recent events in Belgorod. I express my deepest condolences to the families and relatives of those killed in the Belgorod shelling. Based on this, I consider it inappropriate to hold New Year's events."
In a show of unity, several other cities across Russia, including Vladivostok, Blagoveshchensk, and Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky, have also opted to cancel New Year's celebrations, including traditional holiday fireworks.
The tragic incident unfolded when Ukrainian military forces shelled the center of Belgorod on the afternoon of December 30. Preliminary reports indicate that 14 people lost their lives, and over a hundred individuals sustained injuries. Witnesses described the shelling as one of the most severe incidents since the commencement of the war.
As of the latest update on December 31, the toll from the Belgorod tragedy has risen to 24 people, as confirmed by Governor Vyacheslav Gladkov on his Telegram channel.
