Tehran has expressed its commitment to invest in the development of hydroelectric power in Tajikistan, a significant move discussed during a meeting between Tajikistan's Prime Minister, Kokhir Rasulzoda, and Iran's Minister of Energy, Ali Akbar Mehrabian, Sputnik Tajikistan reported.
The discussions underscored the mutual readiness of both nations to enhance cooperation in various sectors, including economics, trade, and the establishment of joint ventures in transport, scientific innovation, and other industries.
The meeting resulted in the conclusion of several agreements related to investments in water supply and electricity. Notably, Iran affirmed its ongoing support for key projects in Tajikistan, including the Sangtuda Hydroelectric Power Plant (HPP)-2, the Istiklol tunnel, and the Rogun Hydroelectric Power Plant (HPP). These projects play a crucial role in Tajikistan's infrastructure development and energy production.
In addition to economic cooperation, Prime Minister Rasulzoda called for simplified tourism conditions between Tajikistan and Iran. He highlighted the potential positive impact of abolishing visas for citizens, as agreed upon by the presidents of both countries. The implementation of this decision is expected to facilitate increased flights and tourism exchanges, fostering people-to-people connections.
The resumption of the state television and radio company of Iran's representative office in Tajikistan was also announced during the discussions. According to Ahmad Navruzi, the deputy head of external relations of the television and radio company, the reopening of the representative office aims to maximize the expansion of relations between the two nations.
Earlier Daryo reported that President Emomali Rahmon recently announced a significant allocation of TJS 9 bn (around $829 mn) for the restoration of energy facilities in Tajikistan. Rahmon highlighted the crucial role of this funding in averting a countrywide electricity shortage.
