In a recent development in Samarkand, authorities have uncovered an illicit cryptocurrency mining operation in a residential property, causing significant financial losses estimated at UZS 2.5bn ($201,896).
The discovery was made in collaboration with the Cybersecurity Department of the Ministry of Internal Affairs in the Samarkand region and specialists from the regional power grid enterprise, revealing a nexus between the illegal use of electronic technologies and electricity, the ministry's press service reports.
The individual at the center of the operation, identified as 33-year-old H.A. residing in Samarkand city, was targeted as part of rapid-preventive measures aimed at identifying and curbing unlawful activities. Investigation teams found that H.A., operating under the pseudonym Mayin, had established an unauthorized mining farm within his apartment, utilizing a network of devices for the operation.
Preliminary assessments indicate that Mayin's actions resulted in material damages totaling UZS 2.2bn ($181,868). The illicit setup was executed without the necessary permits, documentation, or metering equipment.
In response to this alarming situation, law enforcement authorities have initiated a criminal case. This particular offense carries severe penalties, including imprisonment ranging from 8 to 15 years. As the investigation unfolds, efforts are underway to determine if H.A. is linked to other similar, undetected crimes.
This revelation follows a prior incident where another illegal mining farm, associated with Mayin, was discovered in the basement of a non-residential building in the "Kamolot" neighborhood of the Past Dargom district in the Samarkand region. The earlier discovery led to damages amounting to UZS 2.2bn ($180,656), impacting both the state and society. Authorities are intensifying their investigative and search operations to ensure comprehensive scrutiny of the circumstances surrounding these illicit activities.
