Uzbekistan has increased its defense and security spending to UZS 3.2 trillion (approximately $260 mn), as outlined in the amendments to the law "On the State Budget of 2023." The Legislative Chamber and the Senate of the Oliy Majlis approved these amendments on December 15 and December 20, respectively, Gazeta reported.
The amendments highlight a noteworthy increase of UZS 1.91 trillion (over $154 mn), constituting a 37% rise, in the budgets of key national security and defense-related entities. These include the Ministry of Defense, the State Security Service, the Ministry of Internal Affairs, the National Guard, the Customs Committee, the State Reserve Management Committee, and other organizations. This surge brings the overall budget for defense and security to 97 trillion soums, equivalent to approximately $7.8 bn.
The primary driver behind the surge in defense expenditures is the infusion UZS of 3.2 trillion (approximately $260 mn). This boost contrasts with a reduction in other budgetary allocations. Specifically, the Customs Committee and the State Reserve Management Committee ("O‘zdavzaxira") are being transferred to the Ministry of Economy and Finance. Consequently, their budgets are seeing a decrease, with the Customs Committee facing a reduction of UZS 944.4 bn (over $76 mn) and the State Reserve Management Committee experiencing a cut of UZS 64.5 bn (over $5.2 mn)
