More than 600 bushes of the protected Tajik ferula species were illegally cut down in Surkhandarya. The press service of the regional department of ecology has confirmed that this destructive act occurred within the premises of the state forestry "Bobodog."
The department has attributed this incident to the irresponsible attitude displayed by the foresters towards their responsibilities. In response, specialists have taken immediate action, collecting necessary documentation and assessing the extent of the damage inflicted upon the natural environment.
Disturbingly, this is not an isolated event. Between July and September 2023, a staggering 11,550 Tajik ferula bushes were unlawfully cut down within the territory of the Bobodog State Forestry. The estimated financial loss resulting from this destruction amounts to approximately UZS 5.7 bn ($468,057).
It is essential to highlight that the Tajik ferula is included in Uzbekistan's Red Book, signifying its endangered status due to declining population numbers. This incident is a stark reminder of the urgent need for enhanced conservation efforts and stricter enforcement to safeguard these invaluable natural resources.
