Russian President Vladimir Putin on October 5 announced that Armenia did not listen to Russia's proposals regarding Nagorno-Karabakh.
Well, we were told 'no'. We can't afford doing that (Armenia leaving Nagorno-Karabakh). (We asked) 'What will you do'? (They answered) 'We will fight'. Well, okay."
Putin said that Armenia remained an ally of Russia and that Moscow was ready to help the people of Karabakh, noting that most of the ethnic Armenian population had already left the region.
They signed the statement (Armenia and Azerbaijan), do you understand? The statement in which Armenia confirms Nagorno-Karabakh as a part of Azerbaijan Republic."
The President of Russia noted that Armenia remains Russia's ally and that in case of humanitarian issues, Russia is ready to help and can discuss it with Armenia. Russia expressed its readiness to support the people without even saying.
Moreover, Putin stated that Azerbaijan President Ilham Aliyev had assured him that the safety and rights of Armenians in Nagorno-Karabakh would be protected.
He (Azerbaijan President Ilham Aliyev) assured me all the time that whatever happens, he will provide the safety and rights of Armenians in Nagorno-Karabakh. But there are no Armenians left there (in Nagorno-Karabakh). Everyone left. Do you know that everyone left? There are just no Armenians. Maybe one thousand or one and a half thousand. That's it."
