On September 20, President Shavkat Mirziyoyev of the Republic of Uzbekistan engaged in a significant meeting with Ajay Banga, the President of the World Bank Group, in New York. The discussions were centered around the pivotal aspects of broadening the extensive cooperation between Uzbekistan and the World Bank, encompassing various critical domains, presidential press service reported.
President Mirziyoyev commenced the conversation by extending his congratulations to Ajay Banga on his new role as President of the World Bank Group. He expressed confidence in Banga's leadership, emphasizing the bank's continued active support for the sustainable economic development of developing countries under his guidance.
The meeting delved into several key areas of cooperation, including enhancing the bank's expertise and technical support in fields such as privatization and effective public administration. The leaders discussed backing strategic initiatives, such as financing and private investments in projects related to decarbonization, alternative energy, infrastructure, communications, water supply (including public-private partnerships). Ajay Banga highly praised Uzbekistan's program of irreversible reforms and affirmed his commitment to further develop this mutually beneficial partnership.
A significant outcome of the meeting was an agreement to involve the Bank's Advisory Council, composed of leading figures from the global business community, in devising measures to boost direct investments flowing into Uzbekistan.
It's worth noting that Uzbekistan stands as one of the largest partner-beneficiaries of the World Bank. The portfolio of collaborative projects has expanded more than fivefold in the past six years. The Partnership Program, designed for the period until 2026, includes projects with a total value of $4bn, covering all priority areas outlined in Uzbekistan's development strategy.
The meeting underscored the commitment of Uzbekistan and the World Bank to fostering sustainable development, economic growth, and mutually advantageous cooperation for the benefit of the country and the broader region.
