On September 8, as part of the International Conference on Food Security held in Samarkand, Uzbekistan hosted the Agri-Food Investment Forum, a platform designed to showcase the agricultural potential of participating nations. The event witnessed the active participation of over 100 companies representing 26 countries.
The outcome of this forum was marked by the signing of agreements totaling an impressive $1.88bn in value. These agreements encompass a wide spectrum of initiatives, including:
Direct Investment: Agreements worth $857.3mn were inked, spanning 24 projects aimed at attracting foreign direct investment.
Grants and Funding: A total of 14 projects, with a combined value of $707.5mn, received commitments from international financial institutions.
Trade Agreements: Additional agreements, valued at $319.2mn, were established to foster international trade relations.
The Samarkand International Conference on Food Security was orchestrated by the Uzbekistan government, with valuable technical support from the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO). Furthermore, on September 7, Uzbekistan officially ratified the Declaration on Food Security, originally adopted by the FAO in 1996. This significant act reaffirms the inalienable right of all individuals to access safe and nutritious food, aligning with the fundamental principles of the right to adequate food and the elimination of hunger.
In this context, Uzbekistan has undertaken a pivotal commitment to address hunger within the country, particularly noteworthy as it grapples with the highest levels of food insecurity in Central Asia.
