NATO has stated that it has no evidence suggesting a deliberate Russian attack on Romania after drone debris was discovered on Romanian territory earlier this week, as per the organization's Secretary-General, Jens Stoltenberg.
The incident in question unfolded after Ukraine claimed that drones had detonated in Romania during an overnight Russian air strike on a Ukrainian port situated across the Danube River. These attacks have surged since July when Moscow abandoned an agreement that had effectively ended a Russian blockade of Ukraine's Black Sea ports.
Initially, Romanian officials refuted the Ukrainian allegations, but their stance shifted on September 6 when Romanian Defense Minister Angel Tilvar acknowledged that parts of what appeared to be a Russian drone had fallen on Romanian soil.
Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg addressed the situation during a session with EU lawmakers, stating;
"We don't have any information indicating an intentional attack by Russia, and we are awaiting the outcome of the ongoing investigation."
He also emphasized the inherent risks posed by Russian air strikes in close proximity to NATO's borders.
"It demonstrates the risks of incidents and accidents. Regardless of that outcome (of the investigation), what we have seen, of course, is a lot of fighting and also air attacks close to NATO borders," Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg added.
Romania's Defense Ministry, in a separate statement on September 7, assured the public that the country did not face any direct threat to its territory or territorial waters resulting from the Russian strikes on Ukraine that occurred on September 6 night.
Over the past year, Russia has conducted long-range air strikes on various targets in Ukraine since its invasion of the neighboring nation. Kyiv has reported instances of suspected Russian weapons flying over or crashing into neighboring countries on several occasions.
One of the most serious incidents occurred last November when two individuals were killed in Poland by a missile that landed near the border. Poland and its NATO allies later confirmed that the missile was a misfired Ukrainian air defense missile.
