Carles Puigdemont, the former president of Catalonia, has called for an end to legal proceedings against Catalan separatists linked to the 2017 independence referendum and an amnesty for those already convicted.
According to Euronews, these are the terms he's put forward to kickstart talks with Spain's Prime Minister, Pedro Sanchez. During a press conference in Belgium, where he's sought refuge, Puigdemont also urged "respect for the legitimacy" of the Catalan independence movement.
Puigdemont could play a crucial role in resolving Spain's political gridlock, which emerged after no party secured a clear majority in the recent elections. Although the candidate from the right-wing received the most votes, he couldn't form a government, potentially paving the way for the continuation of the left-wing coalition.
Puigdemont stated,
"Certain prerequisites should be met before the legal deadline to avoid new elections. This would be a natural progression, pushing us all to work towards fulfilling our historical commitment to resolving the conflict in the upcoming parliamentary term. It all hinges on political willingness."
Spain's Deputy Prime Minister, Yolanda Diaz, met with Puigdemont in Brussels on September 4, without Sanchez's approval.
