Uzbekistan's taekwondo athlete, Ulugbek Rashitov, has achieved a victory at the Taekwondo Grand Prix stage held in Paris from September 1 to 3. This prestigious tournament featured elite taekwondo competitors from 59 countries who vied for valuable points toward qualifying for the 2024 Olympic Games in France. A total of 255 athletes competed across eight weight categories.
Rashitov, who competed in the under 68 kg weight category, displayed outstanding skills and determination throughout the tournament. He secured victory by defeating prominent opponents, including Amar Cisse Moussa from Gabon (2:0), Ignacio Morales from China (2:0), Liang Yushuaia from China (2:0), and Marco Golubic from Croatia (2:0). In a thrilling final match, Rashitov triumphed over Edival Pontes from Brazil with a score of 2:0.
The Olympic Committee of Uzbekistan proudly noted that Ulugbek Rashitov became the first Uzbek taekwondo fighter to clinch victory in the Grand Prix series tournament twice consecutively. Prior to his success in Paris, Rashitov secured the Grand Prix title in Italy in June, cementing his status as a dominant force in the sport.
The Taekwondo Grand Prix series for 2023 comprises four tournaments held in Rome, Paris (specifically, its suburb of Levallois), Taiyuan, and Manchester. The series concludes with a grand finale in the United Kingdom. These Grand Prix events carry significant weight in the taekwondo world, as athletes earn crucial points for their Olympic rankings.
Since their inception in 2013, Grand Prix competitions have become one of the most prestigious taekwondo tournaments globally. These tournaments feature a coefficient of 6, meaning that points accrued by athletes during the competition are multiplied by 6 and integrated into the world ranking. The stage winner receives a substantial +60 points added to their rating, while the silver medalist earns 36 points, and the bronze medalist garners 21.6 points. Notably, these rating points remain unchanged for a period of 4 years, further emphasizing the significance of Rashitov's consecutive Grand Prix victories.
