Former U.S. President Donald Trump is slated to face a federal court in Washington on March 4, 2024, concerning his endeavors to manipulate the outcome of the 2020 elections.
According to Euronews, Judge Tanya Chutkan, who will oversee the proceedings, arrived at this decision by dismissing propositions from both the prosecution and the defense.
Judge Tanya Chutkan, responsible for presiding over the trial, made this choice, explaining on Monday that she opted for this specific date due to the other two options being unsatisfactory.
Special prosecutor Jack Smith proposed commencing the trial on January 2, 2024. Nevertheless, Chutkan regarded this timeframe as insufficient for proper trial preparation. Conversely, the defense advocated for scheduling the trial for April 2026, a timeline which the judge found to be "far beyond the necessary."
Rejecting Trump's lawyers' appeal for a multi-year extension, the judge interpreted their intention not as "motivated by the need to consider an extensive amount of evidence," but rather as an effort to postpone the proceedings until after the 2024 presidential elections. Trump aims to be one of the initial contenders for nomination from the Republican Party.
