UNC Chancellor Kevin Guskiewicz expressed profound sorrow over the loss of the faculty member in a statement.
"I'm devastated the UNC community lost a faculty member in an act of violence on campus," Chancellor Kevin Guskiewicz stated.
The shooting occurred within the vicinity of Caudill Laboratories on the Chapel Hill campus.
Authorities received reports of shots fired on the campus during the early afternoon, prompting an immediate response from campus police and law enforcement agencies. The suspect was located and successfully taken into custody, leading to the issuance of an "all clear" signal by the police approximately two hours later. During the tense standoff, a heavy police presence was observed around the campus, as depicted in media footage from the scene.
In a bid to maintain the safety and well-being of the university community, UNC swiftly canceled all classes and campus events for the remainder of the day on August 28 and the entirety of August 29. This decision was made in response to the incident and the subsequent investigation.
The identity of the deceased faculty member as well as that of the suspect have yet to be released by authorities. Earlier in the course of the event, law enforcement had shared the image of the male suspect on X (formerly known as Twitter), identifying him as a "person of interest in today's armed and dangerous person situation."
