A distressing incident unfolded in Tashkent on August 14, as a journalist and cameraman from "ZorTV" were violently attacked while covering a news story. The attack resulted in injuries and hospitalisation for the cameraman. The situation escalated after the media team attempted to document a reported incident involving a fallen concrete beam on a railway track.
Journalist Nurzodbek Vahidov and operator Sardorbek Yoldoshev of "ZorTV" were subjected to physical assault while covering the aftermath of a fallen concrete beam incident. The attack occurred around 1:30 p.m. and resulted in injuries that required medical attention.
Chronology of events
Nurzodbek Vahidov provided a detailed account of the incident. Following reports of the fallen concrete beam on social media, the media team decided to investigate the scene. Upon arrival, they noticed other channels had already covered the incident and engaged with the management. Despite the delay, Vahidov and Yoldoshev proceeded to film the site. However, a person identified as Nodir confronted the team, displaying hostility and demanding that they cease their work.
The altercation escalated as Nodir physically attacked the journalists. The situation grew more intense as he aggressively obstructed their work and verbally abused them. The confrontation resulted in injuries, including a broken nose for Sardorbek Yoldoshev, who had to be taken to the hospital via ambulance. The camera used for filming was also damaged during the incident.
"We tried to explain to the person who started beating us and hindered the work of our cameraman that our camera is expensive. But he didn't care. The people around us, instead of helping us and stopping the bully, seemed to grab us and help him," says the journalist.
Response and future actions
Despite efforts to explain the importance and value of their equipment, the attackers disregarded their concerns. The lack of intervention from bystanders further exacerbated the situation. Following the attack, the area's prevention inspector contacted the journalists to inquire about the incident.
"Also, the management of our TV channel wants to issue a letter to the law enforcement agencies regarding the incident. Our channel's lawyer is talking with us and preparing documents,"
says Nurzodbek. Legal proceedings are being initiated, with the channel's lawyer preparing necessary documents.
