Alexei Navalny has been sentenced to 19 years in a strict-regime penal colony, an unusually harsh punishment for political cases, Euronews has reported.
At an on-site hearing in strict-regime Correctional Colony No. 6 in Melekhovo No. 6, Moscow City Court handed down the verdict to Alexei Navalny on "extremist" charges. This sentencing is an unusual measure for political cases.
Russia has only 11 strict-regime colonies, intended for extremely dangerous recidivists, those sentenced to death but not executed due to moratorium, and those given life sentences. Under the strict regime, meetings with lawyers are much more restricted, and visits and parcels are limited. Additionally, solitary confinement is officially allowed.
Alexei Navalny is already serving a nine-year prison term for "fraud." He was convicted in January 2021 after surviving poisoning and returning to Russia from Germany, where he received treatment. German doctors confirmed that he was poisoned with a substance from the "Novichok" group.
In April of 2023, Navalny revealed that he is also facing a case of "terrorism" and accused the Kremlin of seeking to punish him with a life sentence for criticizing them.
Navalny's allies predicted a severe sentence, as they believe the trial has a demonstrative nature: it is the first time an opposition figure is being tried "under a political charge for political activities."
