Mexican marines expose cartel's explosives stash, highlighting growing militarization

Mexican marines expose cartel's explosives stash, highlighting growing militarization

In a significant discovery that underscores the increasing militarization of drug cartels in Mexico, the Mexican marines have uncovered a cache of 50 kilograms of dynamite concealed within a methamphetamine laboratory operated by a notorious drug cartel. The operation, which took place in the northern state of Sinaloa, raises concerns over the potential use of such explosives in attacks against law enforcement and the escalating arms race between cartels and authorities.

The Mexican Navy Department revealed that the seized explosives had the potential for use in the creation of bombs, mines, and other destructive devices capable of causing substantial damage, including to heavily armored vehicles. Authorities suspect that these explosives could have been intended for attacks against law enforcement personnel, as cartels increasingly turn to military-style tactics to assert their dominance and counter government operations.

This discovery sheds light on the cartels' growing interest in utilizing explosive devices as tools of warfare against rival factions and law enforcement agencies. The cache, found within a cave-like structure in Sinaloa, further highlights the region's significance as the stronghold of the eponymous drug cartel responsible for the lab.

Photographs from the operation reveal boxes labeled "Explosives Blasting Type E," indicating that the materials were potentially manufactured within Mexico. These explosives, resembling those used in the mining and construction industries, have been targeted in thefts from mines previously reported in the country.

In a series of coordinated raids commencing on July 31, Mexican marines also seized approximately 8,620 kilograms of nearly finished methamphetamine from three other drug labs. The discovery points to the cartels' multi-faceted operations that combine drug production with the acquisition of weaponry and explosives, underscoring their increasing sophistication.

This revelation comes on the heels of a July incident in which a different drug cartel executed a series of roadway bombings in western Mexico, resulting in the deaths of four police officers and two civilians. The attack was strategically coordinated to eliminate law enforcement personnel, showcasing the cartels' capacity to orchestrate large-scale assaults with deadly consequences.

The latest discoveries contribute to the growing pattern of cartel militarization in Mexico. Recent instances include a car bomb deployed by a cartel in June, which killed a National Guard officer in the neighboring state of Guanajuato. Moreover, explosive devices wounded 10 soldiers in Michoacan in 2022 and resulted in the death of a civilian.

Explosives are just one facet of the escalating tactics employed by Mexican drug cartels. Cartel conflicts in Michoacan have featured an array of military-style strategies, such as trenches, pillboxes, makeshift armored vehicles, and weaponized drones designed to deploy small bombs.

As Mexican authorities grapple with these increasingly brazen and lethal tactics, concerns mount over the growing power of drug cartels and the escalating violence that threatens not only law enforcement but also civilian populations.
