In a devastating incident on August 2, a Union Pacific freight train collided with a 2002 Honda car, resulting in the loss of three lives and leaving one person injured. The accident occurred south of Gervais, just north of Salem, Oregon, prompting an immediate response from law enforcement and emergency services.
The Marion County Sheriff’s Office released a statement detailing the sequence of events that led to the fatal crash. At approximately 7 p.m., the ill-fated Honda, traveling west on a farm access road, attempted to cross the railroad tracks. Tragically, the car was struck by the oncoming Union Pacific freight train, leading to a catastrophic collision.
The victims of this heart-wrenching accident have been identified as Catarino Hernandez Guzman, 31; Francisco Lopez, 33; and Jesus Carrera Avendano, 22. Each of these lives was abruptly cut short in the collision, sending shockwaves through the community and leaving families and friends in mourning.
An additional passenger in the vehicle, 26-year-old Anselmo Caballero Herrera, survived the impact but sustained significant injuries. Herrera was promptly airlifted to a local hospital for medical attention. The latest reports from the Statesman Journal indicate that Herrera's condition remains under close medical supervision.
Investigations into the incident have revealed that the driver of the Honda failed to obey a crucial traffic control device situated near the railroad tracks. The Marion County Sheriff's Office emphasized that alcohol and drugs were not contributing factors in the crash. While the exact circumstances leading to the failure to adhere to the traffic control device are still being scrutinized, this tragic event serves as a stark reminder of the importance of road safety and adherence to traffic regulations.
The collision resulted in a temporary halt to train services in the area as authorities worked to clear the scene and initiate investigations. Union Pacific, a major freight railroad operator in the United States, expressed condolences for the lives lost and emphasized their cooperation with the ongoing investigation.
