China's Foreign Minister Qin Gang relieved of duties, predecessor Wang Yi returns to helm

On July 25, Foreign Minister Qin Gang was relieved of his duties, with no official explanation provided for the sudden move. Qin Gang, who assumed the post in December 2022, has not been seen in public for over a month, prompting widespread speculation about his whereabouts.

The official China News Agency reported that Qin Gang's predecessor, Wang Yi, will be taking over as Foreign Minister. This decision comes as a surprise to many, given that Qin Gang had only been in office for a relatively short time.

The last public appearance of Qin Gang was on June 25, after a meeting with his Vietnamese counterpart in Beijing. Since then, he has been conspicuously absent from various diplomatic engagements, including a crucial gathering of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) in Indonesia in early July.

In response to growing concerns and rumors about his disappearance circulating on social media, the Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs attributed Qin Gang's absence to "health reasons." However, this explanation failed to quell the mounting speculation surrounding the situation.

The lack of concrete information about Qin Gang's status led to increased pressure on the authorities to provide a clear answer to the public. Calls for transparency and accountability intensified as days turned into weeks without any sign of the Foreign Minister.

During Qin Gang's unexplained absence, his predecessor, Wang Yi, had already taken on some of the ministerial responsibilities. This arrangement fueled further speculation about the reasons behind Qin Gang's removal from office.

As the country faces numerous foreign policy challenges and opportunities, the sudden change in leadership could have implications for its international relations. As of now, no official statement has been issued regarding the reasons behind Qin Gang's removal from office or the specifics of Wang Yi's return as Foreign Minister.
