A paddleboarder who had been reported missing was recovered from a pond in Martha's Vineyard on July 24, ABC News has reported.
The Massachusetts State Police (MSP) informed that the person found was Tafari Campbell, a 45-year-old man who had previously worked as an employee for former President Barack Obama. MSP's Underwater Recovery Unit conducted the retrieval at Edgartown Great Pond.
In a joint statement, Barack Obama and Michelle Obama expressed their deep sadness over Tafari's passing. They fondly remembered him as a talented sous chef at the White House, passionate about food's ability to bring people together. Even after leaving the White House, they asked him to continue working with them, and he willingly agreed, becoming an integral part of their lives.
Tafari, who was visiting Martha's Vineyard at the time of the incident, leaves behind his wife Sherise and their twin boys, Xavier and Savin.
The victim's body was discovered about 100 feet from the shore and 8 feet underwater by Massachusetts Environmental Police Officers. The search for the missing paddleboarder had been temporarily suspended to allow the rescue teams to regroup and plan their next steps.
The Massachusetts State Police Detective Unit is currently investigating the incident.
