Wildfires have been rapidly spreading across Spain, Italy, and Greece, fueled by scorching temperatures during the hottest days of the year. As a result, thousands of people have been forced to evacuate their homes, and numerous residential properties have been engulfed by the flames.
In Greece, firefighters are facing significant challenges due to strong winds, which have hindered their efforts to combat multiple fire fronts. These blazes are spreading in various directions, particularly in areas south, east, and west of Athens. As a precautionary measure, three towns and a summer camp housing over 900 children have been evacuated. Authorities have taken action against a suspected arsonist, who has been apprehended by the police.
The first fire originated in Kouvaras, located about 50 kilometers southeast of Athens. Greece, along with Italy and Spain, has been grappling with a persistent heatwave since the previous week, with temperatures soaring as high as 44 degrees Celsius in the central regions of the country.
In Spain, a fire that broke out on the island of La Palma on July 15 is gradually weakening, although there are still active fire fronts. Approximately 3,500 hectares of land and 20 buildings have succumbed to the flames. Fortunately, most of the 4,000 evacuated individuals have been able to return to their homes, as the situation stabilizes.
The heatwave and heightened risk of wildfires have also impacted Italy, where temperatures have surpassed 40 degrees Celsius. Predictions of record-breaking heat in the coming days prompted the health ministry to issue a red alert for 16 cities, including Rome, Bologna, and Florence. The Acropolis in Athens, a prominent tourist attraction, has remained closed for the third consecutive day during the hottest hours.
Italy faced another fire-related setback as authorities suspended all flights at Catania airport following a fire that broke out at night of July 16. The origin of the fire is currently under investigation, and flight operations will remain suspended until July 19.
The simultaneous wildfires in these Mediterranean countries have highlighted the urgent need for effective fire prevention measures and strategies to mitigate the devastating impact of climate change. The governments and local authorities are working tirelessly to control the fires and protect their communities, while also emphasizing the importance of individual responsibility in preventing wildfires during such extreme weather conditions.
