Former US President Donald Trump stated that if he were re-elected, he would request Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and Russian dictator Vladimir Putin to reach a peaceful agreement, Yahoo News has reported.
Recent public opinion polls show that Trump is currently the most popular Republican candidate for the upcoming 2024 presidential primaries. According to a survey conducted by YouGov and the Economist from July 8 to 11, 48% of respondents would support him in the primaries, while 22% would support Florida Governor Ron DeSantis.
Trump mentioned that he would warn Putin that the US would increase military support to Ukraine if an agreement is not reached.
"I would say to Zelensky, just do it. You have to make a deal. I would say to Putin, if you don't make a deal, we're going to give a lot to Ukraine. We're going to give them more than they've ever gotten before, if necessary," said Trump, adding that he would reach a deal in just one day.
Trump has repeatedly stated his intention to end the conflict with Russia within 24 hours.
"It seems like Donald Trump once had those 24 hours at his disposal. We were at war, not a full-scale war, but we were at war, and I suppose he had that time at his disposal, but he must have had other priorities," said Zelensky in an interview on June 9.
Zelensky presented Ukraine's 10-point peace plan at the G20 Summit in November 2022. The plan includes the immediate withdrawal of Russian troops, the establishment of a tribunal for Russian war crimes, the release of all prisoners of war and deported Ukrainians, and the prevention of ecocide.
In May, Trump stated that he would not provide Ukraine with military assistance if he wins the 2024 elections.
"We're giving out so much equipment that we don't have ammunition for ourselves," Trump said on May 11, as reported by CNN.
He also refused to comment on who he believed should win the war between Russia and Ukraine, stating that he wants "everyone to stop dying."
Meanwhile, according to a Reuters/Ipsos poll published on June 28, approximately 65% of US citizens want Washington to continue providing military aid to Ukraine.
