In a tragic incident on July 17, a five-story apartment building collapsed in the Egyptian capital, Cairo, claiming the lives of at least nine people. As rescue operations continue at the scene, authorities are grappling with the aftermath of the disaster.
Building collapses are unfortunately not uncommon in Egypt, where substandard construction practices and a lack of maintenance are prevalent issues in shantytowns, impoverished urban neighborhoods, and rural areas.
The rescue teams have managed to recover nine bodies from beneath the rubble of the building located in Cairo's Hadaeq el-Qubbah neighborhood, approximately 3.2 kilometers from the city center. Additionally, four survivors have been transported to a hospital, while authorities have evacuated a nearby apartment building as a precautionary measure.
The Ministry of Social Solidarity of Egypt has announced its intention to provide financial assistance to the families of the nine victims who lost their lives in this tragic accident. Each family will receive approximately $1,940 from the ministry. The ministry has also pledged to offer aid to the injured individuals and is actively monitoring the extent of the damage sustained by nearby properties.
Local reports indicate that the area surrounding the collapsed building has been cordoned off by the police, allowing rescue teams to diligently search for any potential survivors trapped beneath the debris.
At present, the exact cause of the building collapse remains unknown and is under investigation.
Over the past few years, the Egyptian government has been making efforts to combat illegal construction, imposing stricter regulations and enforcement measures. Furthermore, initiatives are underway to construct new cities and neighborhoods to relocate individuals living in high-risk areas, aiming to provide them with safer and more secure living conditions.
