On July 8, in the city of Maulbronn in southwestern Germany, unknown people burned a Quran and threw it in front of a mosque, TRT Russian has reported, referring to the Turkish-Islamic Union of Religious Institutions in Germany.
The incident occurred outside the Mimarsinan Mosque in the town of Maulbronn, located in the state of Baden-Württemberg. People in a moving car desecrated and set fire to the Quran.
"After the incident, when we reviewed the surveillance camera footage of our mosque, we saw that an object was thrown from a car on the main street in front of the mosque. It turned out to be a burned Quran, which was thrown in front of the mosque's entrance," said Osman Adibelli, the director of the mosque association.
He clarified that the association has filed a complaint with the police regarding the incident.
"Due to the reflection of the car's headlights approaching the front part of the mosque, we were unable to identify the license plate or the number of people involved in the attack," Adibelli explained.
This incident follows numerous burnings or desecrations of copies of the Quran in various European countries, including the recent controversial burning of the Quran in front of a mosque in Sweden. The desecration of the Muslim holy book took place with the approval of the Stockholm police and municipality, causing international outrage.
Muslim leaders and politicians emphasized that such desecrations and provocations do not fall under the protection of freedom of speech and called on the authorities in Sweden to ban such practices.
In mid-May, Turkey succeeded in having UNESCO include the term "Islamophobia" in a draft resolution against discrimination and racism.
Turkey's permanent representative to the organization, Gülnur Aybet, clarified that the term "Islamophobia" was adopted at the UN General Assembly thanks to Ankara's efforts. However, the diplomat noted that many countries in the UNESCO Executive Board expressed their dissatisfaction with the inclusion of this term in the resolution project on discrimination and racism within the organization. Nevertheless, she emphasized that thanks to Turkey's efforts, the term "Islamophobia" will also be included in this resolution project.
