The United Nations Security Council was unable to extend the humanitarian aid delivery program to Syria. Its validity expired on July 9, Euronews has reported.
The session took place in New York on Tuesday. Russia vetoed Brazil and Sweden's resolution project to extend the cross-border mechanism for delivering humanitarian supplies to the northwestern region of Syria for nine months.
In turn, the United Kingdom, France, and the United States vetoed the Russian resolution project on the same issue.
The cross-border assistance mechanism has been in operation since 2014. The delivery of supplies was carried out overland from Turkey to rebel-held areas in the Idlib province through the Bab al-Hawa border crossing. It is the only open border crossing between Syria and Turkey.
Moscow considers this mechanism a violation of Damascus' sovereignty and proposes organizing deliveries from within the country, specifically from territories controlled by the Assad government.
Now, the Security Council will have to negotiate an alternative compromise. Otherwise, over 4 mn inhabitants of the war-torn region will find themselves in an even more dire situation.
