Elton John's final concert of the "Farewell Yellow Brick Road" tour took place at Stockholm's Tele2 Arena on the evening of July 8th, Meduza has reported.
The 76-year-old British musician performed his hits including "Philadelphia Freedom," "Tiny Dancer," "Have Mercy on the Criminal," "Rocket Man," and "Candle in the Wind." During the performance of "Border Song," he dedicated the song to singer Aretha Franklin, who covered the composition.
Prior to performing "Cold Heart," a live broadcast from Coldplay's concert in Gothenburg was shown to the audience at Tele2 Stadium. Coldplay's lead vocalist, Chris Martin, expressed gratitude to Elton John on behalf of the band and all the artists he has inspired and supported. Coldplay then performed a cover of Elton John's song "Rocket Man" at their own concert.
At the end of his concert, Elton John addressed the 45,000-strong audience with a speech, expressing his gratitude to his fans.
"I've had the most amazing career, one that's impossible to comprehend. Fifty-two years of sheer joy of playing music. I wouldn't be here if it wasn't for you. You bought the singles, the albums, the CDs, and most importantly, you bought the concert tickets, and you know how I love playing live. It has been life-giving for me, and you've been absolutely wonderful. Thank you!" he said.
Elton John announced that he would "never tour again" but left open the possibility of a "one-off" concert in the future. He concluded the concert by performing the titular song of the show, "Goodbye Yellow Brick Road."
The "Farewell Yellow Brick Road" tour began in September 2018 and was postponed for almost two years due to the COVID-19 pandemic and the musician's hip surgery. The Stockholm performance marked the end of a series of over 330 concerts that Elton John held worldwide.
In May 2023, even before its conclusion, the "Farewell Yellow Brick Road" tour was recognized as the most profitable in history. According to Billboard magazine's estimates, by mid-June, the show's earnings exceeded $900 mn.
