One of Turkmenistan's economic priorities is to increase and expand electricity export routes, the local TV channel Altyn Asyr reports.
Deputy Prime Minister Baimurad Annamammedov said so at a government meeting. For his part, President Serdar Berdimuhamedov underlined the importance of increasing the capacity of the electricity sector.
Turkmenistan sells this energy source to Afghanistan, Iran, Uzbekistan and Kyrgyzstan. Ashgabat is also interested in markets in the Caucasus (via Iran) and South Asia (via Afghanistan).
In Turkmenistan, electricity is generated from natural gas. According to the state plan, total electricity production is scheduled to reach 37.5bn kWh in 2028, up from 28.4bn in 2021.
This sector of the local economy is supported by the Asian Development Bank (ADB), which has allocated $500mn for the construction of ring main power lines across the country. The project is expected to be completed in 2024.
