Mass shootings around July 4 are not uncommon, with data from the Gun Violence Archive (GVA) showing that this holiday has accounted for the highest number of mass shootings in nearly a decade, CNN reports.
GVA defines a "mass shooting" as an incident where four or more people are injured or killed, excluding the shooter. As of now, at least 10 mass shootings have occurred on July 4 and 5, with preliminary information subject to change as investigations progress. Here is what is known about some of these incidents:
July 4:
- Akron, Ohio: Four people were injured during a shooting at the Mason Park Community Center. Shots were believed to have been fired by one or more individuals during a party in the parking lot.
- Edgewood, Maryland: Three men and one juvenile suffered non-fatal injuries in a shooting near Harr Park Court.
- Shreveport, Louisiana: Eleven people were shot, resulting in four fatalities. The shooting took place during a July Fourth celebration.
- Lansing, Michigan: Five individuals, all men in their 20s, were injured at a party.
- Hayward, California: Five people were wounded in a shooting, and a suspect is in police custody.
July 5:
- Washington, DC: Nine individuals, including a 9-year-old and 17-year-old, sustained non-life-threatening injuries during a July Fourth celebration in Northeast DC. Shots were fired from a dark-colored SUV, and it appeared that the victims were targeted.
Mass shootings tend to spike during the "Fourth of July" holiday, with recent years seeing double-digit incidents on a single day. Summer days, particularly in June, July, and August, have higher numbers of mass shootings compared to other times of the year.
