Tragedy struck on the New South Wales mid-north coast as a stranded humpback whale, weighing approximately 30 tonnes, passed away despite valiant rescue efforts.
The lifeless mammal was discovered on the early morning of July 1 by a concerned member of the public on Seven Mile Beach. Despite the collaborative efforts of the Organisation for the Rescue and Research of Cetaceans in Australia (Orrca), Sea World, and the Ballina Shire Council, along with the assistance of the NSW National Parks and Wildlife Service, the whale could not be saved. The cause of its death remains unknown at this time.
A desperate mission is unfolding right now to help save a stranded whale at Seven Mile Beach, Lennox Head. NPWS, ORRCA and Sea World are all onsite providing assistance, while it’s hoped the high tide at 5pm can give the whale a chance at refloating. More at 6pm @nbnnews pic.twitter.com/aqSjhXpYlR

Throughout the day, authorities had reported that the adult humpback whale was in good health, raising hopes for a successful rescue. The National Parks and Wildlife Service spokesperson emphasized the importance of providing immediate care to the stranded creature, with considerations such as shade, posture, and pain relief being prioritized. Simultaneously, ensuring public safety was also of paramount concern, leading officials to urge the public to maintain their distance from the site.

Efforts were made to create an optimal environment for the whale's survival. Trenches were dug around the massive mammal using an excavator, allowing the incoming tide to potentially carry it back into the open waters. However, the challenging task of moving a 30-tonne animal presented significant uncertainty regarding the success of this endeavor.
Skippy Love, representing Orrca, acknowledged the complexity of the situation, highlighting the massive size of the stranded humpback whale. The absence of apparent injuries, such as those caused by boat strikes, added to the mystery surrounding the whale's presence on the beach. Love suggested that a potential illness or disease could have contributed to the unfortunate stranding.
Strandings of humpback whales typically occur individually and often indicate an underlying problem or distress that leads to their beaching. In this case, the well-preserved body condition of the whale further complicates the determination of what caused it to end up on Seven Mile Beach.
As authorities work to understand the circumstances surrounding this tragic event, the loss of this majestic creature serves as a poignant reminder of the challenges faced by marine life.
