In a tragic incident that unfolded in western India, a bus carrying passengers crashed and subsequently caught fire, resulting in the devastating loss of 25 lives. As per local authorities, the unfortunate accident was triggered by a tire blowout, which caused the bus to lose control, collide with a road divider, and ultimately burst into flames.
The incident took place during the early hours of July 1 in the Buldhana district of Maharashtra state. Police officer Sunil Kadasne, speaking to the Press Trust of India news agency, revealed that at the time of the crash, there were 33 individuals onboard the ill-fated bus. Regrettably, 25 people succumbed to the tragic event, while the remaining eight survivors were promptly rushed to a nearby hospital for medical attention.
The private travel bus was en route from Nagpur, a city in Maharashtra state, to Pune city when the accident occurred. The precise cause of the tire blowout is yet to be determined, and authorities are conducting a thorough investigation to gather all relevant details and ascertain the factors that led to the tragic outcome.
State rural development minister Girish Mahajan told reporters that the driver and conductor of the bus were taken into custody for questioning in light of new revelations of possible negligence.
"The driver is saying the tire of the bus burst, after which it hit a pole. But it seems he had dozed off; we will have to see what actually happened," Girish Mahajan commented.
Sadly, fatal road accidents are not uncommon in India, often attributed to a combination of reckless driving practices, poorly maintained road infrastructure, and the operation of aging vehicles. The police reports indicate that over 110,000 individuals lose their lives in road accidents across the country each year, highlighting the urgent need for improved road safety measures and stricter enforcement of traffic regulations.
As the community mourns the loss of these innocent lives, the focus now turns to providing support and solace to the families affected by this devastating incident. Authorities and local organizations are working together to offer assistance, and efforts are underway to prevent similar accidents from occurring in the future.
In fact, the state’s Chief Minister Eknath Shinde and Prime Minister Narendra Modi posted separate tweets expressing sorrow and said they would pay support to each victim’s family, amounting to $8,500.
