The Embassy of Turkmenistan organized a scientific conference on "Makhtumkuli Fraghi - a bridge of Turkmen-Uzbek friendship" in the Khorezm region of Uzbekistan.
The event was timed to coincide with the 300th anniversary of the birth of Turkmen classic poet Makhtumkuli Fraghi. The anniversary will be celebrated next year.
Turkmenistan's Foreign Ministry said participants laid flowers at Makhtumkuli's monument at the Uli Khovli historical and cultural center this week and visited the ancient Ichan Kala complex in Khiva and the Shirgazy madrassa, where Makhtumkuli received his education.
"Friendly and humanitarian relations between the peoples of the two countries have reached a qualitatively new level in recent years," the information said.
Makhtumkuli's legacy is honored in Uzbekistan. One of Tashkent's main streets is named after him, and his bas-relief was installed there in 2017.
His book 'Elinga bakhsh ayla' (Devote yourself to your people) was recently published in Uzbek. Historians say there is documentary evidence that Makhtumkuli once studied in Khiva and Bukhara and considered Alisher Navoi, his mentor.
