Uzbekistan's diplomats met with Rajiv Narayan, Executive Director of the International Commission against the Death Penalty (ICDP), Dunyo reports. The meeting outlined that the law has abolished capital punishment in Uzbekistan since 2018. The issue of enshrining the prohibition of the death penalty at the constitutional level is being considered. President Shavkat Mirziyoyev put forward this initiative.
For his part, Rajiv Narayan fully supported the President's initiative, noting that there is no convincing evidence in the world that the death penalty contributes to reducing crime. He agreed with the President's postulate that reads as follows: 'The right to life is a natural right of every person, and it is given to him by God and not by the state.'
According to Rajiv Narayan, the death penalty is a ruthless, inhuman punishment that denies human dignity and integrity.
The meeting also proposed organizing several joint events to discuss issues of constitutional reforms in Uzbekistan with the participation of ICDP representatives, expert-analytical circles, and the host country's media.
Rajiv Narayan fully supported this initiative, and it was proposed to work together on organizing a joint seminar on this subject shortly.
