December 10 marks International Animal Rights Day to promote animal rights for the welfare of all animals across the globe. This day coincides with the anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights declared in 1948.
In 1998, animal activists demanded to expand the declaration, stating that animals also have the right to be treated with respect, and acts of cruelty against them need to end just as much as humans.
Observance of International Animal Rights Day draws public attention to the issues of speciesism and discrimination and holds particular campaigns to stop deliberate animal cruelty. There are also several other days dedicated to the protection of animals, including World Animal Day (October 4), World Day for Laboratory Animals (April 24), and International Homeless Animals Day (August 19).
