Energy resources shortage in Uzbekistan has nothing to do with external factors, but occurs due to domestic demand and economic growth, the country’s Minister of Energy Zhurabek Mirzamakhmudov said. The Central Asian republic is now negotiating to import gas from the neighboring countries under a commercial contract, media reports.
‘It should be noted that [energy shortage] is not related to external factors. This is associated with rising domestic consumption, an economic upswing, population growth, and human well-being and income, resulting in a sharp rise in energy demand. It should be noted that it is our fault that we cannot cover this need at a sufficient level and in sufficient volumes, the Minister said.
The head of the governmental department noted that importing gas would help cover consumer demand.
‘To cover demand, ensure domestic consumption and solve the problem today we are negotiating to import gas and electricity from neighboring countries, not through some alliance or union. Here we negotiate based on national interests to cooperate based on a commercial contract, purchase, and sale, and not through the transfer of their power networks, the Minister stressed.
