As Daryo previously reported, Uzbekistan’s President Shavkat Mirziyoyev, on Tuesday (November 22), met with Yaël Braun-Pivet, the President of the French National Assembly. Held in the Palais Bourbon, the meeting discussed measures aimed at deepening inter-parliamentary cooperation and strengthening cooperation on ensuring democracy in social and political spheres, the press service of Uzbekistan's President reports.
In her remark, Yaël Braun-Pivet hailed the progress in implementing large-scale democratic reforms in Uzbekistan, including in parliamentary development. Another focus was ensuring and protecting human rights and freedoms and promoting gender equality.
It was particularly noted that women occupied a prominent place in Uzbekistan's legislative and executive bodies, business, and social life.
In September this year, the republic’s capital Tashkent hosted the 14th Summit of Women Speakers of Parliament (14SWSP) in collaboration with the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) which adopted the declaration on enhancing the role of women.
As part of the meeting, the two parties discussed key approaches to preparing the constitutional reform as it is planned to establish norms on abolishing the death penalty. The document would also strengthen human rights guarantees and envisage other essential provisions.
The parties agreed to hold parliamentary friendship group meetings and strengthen cooperation at the forums of the United Nations Human Rights Council, the European Parliament, the Inter-Parliamentary Union, and the OSCE Parliamentary Assembly.
At the end of the meeting, Uzbekistan’s President signed the Guest Book. The head of state also invited the President of the French National Assembly to visit Uzbekistan at any convenient time.
