President Shavkat Mirziyoyev of Uzbekistan met with a delegation from the Russian Federation, led by Mikhail Mishustin, Chairman of the Government of the Russian Federation on September 10. The meeting took place as part of the fifth session of the joint commission between the governments of Uzbekistan and Russia.
At the start of the meeting, Mikhail Mishustin conveyed warm greetings and best wishes from Russian President Vladimir Putin to President Mirziyoyev. The discussions focused on the deepening of multifaceted cooperation and the expansion of strategic partnerships between the two nations.
Key topics included the implementation of agreements made during President Putin's state visit to Uzbekistan from May 26-28. The outcomes of the regular Joint Commission meeting were praised for their effectiveness in advancing bilateral relations.
The conversation highlighted the importance of sustaining trade momentum and expediting cooperative projects across various sectors, including industry, energy, agriculture, and transport. President Mirziyoyev emphasized the need for strengthened regional cooperation, enhanced cultural and humanitarian exchanges, and improved migration management.
In the first seven months of 2024, Uzbekistan's trade turnover with Russia reached $6.8bn, marking a 28.3% increase from $5.3bn during the same period in 2023. This growth highlights Russia's role as a key trading partner for Uzbekistan, making it the second-largest among Uzbekistan's trade partners with an 18.5% share of the total foreign trade turnover.
Uzbekistan's exports to Russia surged by 128.4% in 2024, up from a 105.3% growth rate in 2023. Russia has become Uzbekistan's top export destination, accounting for 14.2% of the country's total exports. Russia imported 468,300 tonnes of fruit and vegetable products from Uzbekistan, worth $343.9mn, leading in these exports.
