The volume of bilateral trade between Kazakhstan and Kyrgyzstan has reached about $2bn, with both sides noting significant potential to expand this figure. The issue was one of the central issues discussed at the seventh meeting of the Supreme Interstate Council of Kazakhstan and Kyrgyzstan, chaired by Presidents Kassym-Jomart Tokayev and Sadyr Japarov in Bishkek.

President Tokayev emphasized that economic cooperation is steadily expanding, supported by joint projects in investment, the water and energy sector, and cultural exchanges. He recalled last year’s signing of the Treaty on Deepening and Expanding Allied Relations and announced the adoption of a new Comprehensive Cooperation Plan during the meeting.
“I am convinced that thanks to high-level political dialogue, the interaction between our countries will reach a new level. Kazakhs and Kyrgyz are fraternal peoples, connected by a common history and destiny. Our friendship, which has stood the test of time, has grown into an unbreakable partnership based on trust and respect,” Tokayev stated.

In response, President Japarov highlighted Kazakhstan’s key role in Kyrgyzstan’s foreign policy, describing it as a brotherly country and one of Kyrgyzstan’s main trading partners.
“Thanks to your personal support, dear Kassym-Jomart Kemelevich, strategic partnership and allied relations are confidently developing between our countries. The Kyrgyz and Kazakhs are twin nations. As Abai once said: ‘Not a single Kazakh will doubt the common origin of the Kyrgyz and Kazakhs,’” Japarov said.

During the meeting, the sides reviewed cooperation in trade and economy, transport and transit, water and energy, and cultural and humanitarian spheres. Senior officials, including ministers of economy, transport, energy, culture, and water resources from both countries, presented reports.
A notable decision was the opening of a branch of the L.N. Gumilyov Eurasian National University at Osh State University, announced by the ministers of higher education of Kazakhstan and Kyrgyzstan.

The presidents reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening relations, guided by the newly adopted cooperation plan and the shared historical and cultural bonds linking the two nations.
Earlier, President Tokayev presented Kyrgyz leader Sadyr Japarov with Kazakhstan’s highest state award, the Order of “Altyn Kyran” (Golden Eagle), in recognition of his role in strengthening bilateral ties and promoting Kyrgyzstan’s progress.
