China has expressed its readiness to assist Afghan returnees as millions of refugees face mass deportations from neighboring countries, The Khaama Press News Agency reports.
Zhao Xing, China’s ambassador to Kabul, announced Beijing’s willingness to support the resettlement of displaced Afghans during a meeting with Abdul Salam Hanafi, the Administrative Deputy of the Taliban’s Prime Minister’s Office.
The meeting, held on Sunday, January 5, saw Zhao Xing pledge China’s commitment to providing housing for returnees. While Abdul Salam Hanafi welcomed the offer, no further details regarding the scope or timeline of assistance were disclosed.
A Nation in Crisis
Since the Taliban’s return to power in August 2021, millions of Afghans have fled the country, with the majority seeking refuge in neighboring Iran and Pakistan. However, these countries have increasingly resorted to mass deportations, leaving many Afghans forced to return to a homeland struggling with economic turmoil, political instability, and widespread poverty.
Deported returnees face significant challenges, including unemployment, lack of housing, and insecurity. Reports indicate that many, unable to find safety or stability in Afghanistan, are compelled to migrate again in search of better opportunities.
Winter Deepens the Plight
The situation for returnees has become even more precarious as Afghanistan faces a harsh winter. Families without proper shelter, heating, or access to essential resources are enduring life-threatening conditions. Hunger, homelessness, and insecurity are rampant, particularly among the most vulnerable groups, such as women and children.
Afghan officials have appealed to their citizens in neighbouring countries to return home.
