EU and ASEAN push for inclusive governance amid Afghanistan’s crisis

The Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) and the European Union (EU) have reiterated their call for the formation of an inclusive and representative government in Afghanistan, while expressing concern over the country’s ongoing humanitarian and political crisis.

In a joint statement issued on April 29, at the 25th EU–ASEAN Foreign Ministers’ Meeting, both sides stressed the need for governance in Afghanistan that is based on the rule of law, respects human rights, and guarantees fundamental freedoms for all citizens.

“We emphasized the importance of forming an inclusive and fully representative government, one that is based on the rule of law, respect for human rights, and fundamental freedoms of all people residing in Afghanistan,” the statement underlined.

The EU and ASEAN also highlighted the importance of ensuring unrestricted access to humanitarian assistance across all regions of Afghanistan, noting the continued need for coordinated international support to address the worsening humanitarian situation.
In addition, the two blocs called for restraint among all parties amid ongoing tensions in the country and urged efforts to reduce escalation and promote stability.
The meeting also referenced continued international concern over developments in Afghanistan, including the fragile security environment and the need for sustained diplomatic engagement.
