Kazakhstan has been named the most peaceful country in the Eurasian region according to the 2024 Global Peace Index (GPI). The country's overall rating improved by 10.8% compared to the previous year, elevating its position from 78th to 59th in the global rankings.
International experts from the Institute of Peace highlighted Kazakhstan's progress, noting enhancements across all measured areas. Notably, there were marked improvements in indicators related to violent demonstrations, the intensity of internal conflicts, and a reduction in nuclear and heavy weapons, alongside the absence of weapons imports.
However, despite this positive trend, experts caution against the potential for internal conflicts. They point to ongoing socio-economic challenges and public discontent as factors that could lead to unrest.
"Many of the socio-economic factors and grievances that fueled the 2022 riots have yet to be addressed," they stated.
Furthermore, the increase in political terrorism raises concerns that issues from past conflicts could resurface.
The report also indicates that the Eurasian region as a whole saw the most significant improvements in peace indicators compared to other regions. While the average tranquility level in the area increased by 0.6%, it remains low, largely due to the ongoing Ukraine-Russia conflict. Of the 12 countries in the region, peace improved in four while it deteriorated in eight.
The 2024 GPI rankings for countries in the Eurasian region are as follows: Kazakhstan - 59th, Uzbekistan - 60th, Moldova - 63rd, Tajikistan - 71st, Armenia - 76th, Kyrgyzstan - 77th, Turkmenistan - 82nd, Georgia - 100th, Azerbaijan - 106th, Belarus - 112th, Russia - 157th, and Ukraine - 159th.
