Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan have identified ten locations on the Syr Darya River for the installation of automatic water metering systems. The announcement follows a meeting between Shavkat Khamraev, Uzbekistan's Minister of Water Resources, and Nurzhan Nurzhigitov, Kazakhstan's Minister of Water Resources and Irrigation.
During the discussions, the ministers addressed key issues related to bilateral and regional cooperation, focusing on the automation of hydroposts and the digitalization of water accounting on the river. According to a statement from Kazakhstan's Ministry of Water Resources and Irrigation, the ministers confirmed their agreement on the ten sites for the new metering systems.
Nurzhan Nurzhigitov highlighted ongoing negotiations with international financial organizations to support the project's implementation. The parties also discussed operational strategies for the Naryn-Syrdarya cascade of reservoirs ahead of the upcoming pre-irrigation season.
At the next meeting of the Interstate Coordination Water Management Commission of Central Asia, officials plan to establish a forecast schedule for reservoir operations and approve water supply volumes.
Additionally, the development of a Regional Strategy for the Rational Use of Water Resources was a key topic of discussion, aiming to enhance sustainable water management practices in the region.
