President Shavkat Mirziyoyev addressed participants at the joint conference of the International Textile Manufacturers Federation (ITMF) and the International Apparel Federation (IAF), held for the first time in Uzbekistan, noting the country’s achievement in increasing cotton fiber processing to 100% and its impact on the textile and apparel industry.
In his address, President Mirziyoyev expressed congratulations on the conference and extended special thanks to Kay V Srinivasan, ITMF President, and Cem Altan, IAF President, for their support in bringing this prestigious conference to Uzbekistan. He also acknowledged the presence of high-ranking representatives from international and regional organizations.
The president highlighted Uzbekistan’s substantial reforms aimed at improving the investment and business environment. He noted the abolition of the state monopoly on cotton cultivation and the establishment of a cluster system covering the entire textile process from raw materials to finished products.
President Mirziyoyev pointed out that these reforms have been recognized internationally, leading to the cancellation of the “cotton boycott” against Uzbekistan and ongoing cooperation with the “Cotton Campaign” coalition. He noted that the processing of cotton fiber has increased from 40% in 2017 to 100%, with significant growth in textile production and exports.
The head of the state emphasized the importance of human capital development, vocational training, and the creation of decent working conditions. Initiatives such as the “Better Work” and “Better Cotton” programs are being systematically introduced, with a focus on ensuring labor rights for the sector’s workforce.
He acknowledged challenges in building national brands and attracting international brands but highlighted successful collaborations with global companies such as Teamdress (Germany), Cotonella (Italy), Indorama (Singapore), Posco International, and Gwangyang (South Korea).
Looking forward, President Mirziyoyev stressed the priorities of enhancing long-term cooperation with foreign investors, increasing the production of high value-added products, and promoting national brands on the international stage. He expressed confidence that the conference would foster further international collaboration and exchange of best practices.
“We highly appreciate and support mutually beneficial initiatives from our foreign partners,” he said, adding that Uzbekistan is ready to host more international events in cities with high tourism and industrial potential.
