The 8th CAREC Think Tank Development Forum (CTTDF) will be held from August 27 to 28 in Almaty Kazakhstan bringing together leading policymakers, experts and scholars from across Asia to address pressing climate challenges in the Central Asia Regional Economic Cooperation (CAREC) region. The forum themed “The Climate Challenge: Thinking Beyond Borders for Collective Action” aims to foster regional collaborations for developing innovative policy recommendations and joint research on climate resilience.
Organized by the CAREC Institute in partnership with the Eurasian Development Bank, the Asian Development Bank and other key stakeholders, the forum seeks to enhance regional cooperation on climate action. The CAREC Institute headquartered in Urumqi, China, is an intergovernmental organization dedicated to knowledge generation and capacity building within the CAREC Program, which encompasses eleven member countries: Afghanistan, Azerbaijan, China, Georgia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Mongolia, Pakistan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan.
The two-day event will feature a diverse lineup of presentations, panel discussions, case studies and interactive sessions aimed at identifying actionable strategies for a climate-resilient CAREC region. Notable speakers will include the Director of the CAREC Institute and the Vice President of the Asian Development Bank who will deliver addresses at the opening ceremony. One of the highlights of the forum will be a research presentation by Arman Akhunbaev, head of the Eurasian Development Bank’s Center for Infrastructure and Industrial Research focusing on financial solutions to address the investment gap in Central Asia’s drinking water and sanitation infrastructure.
The first day of the forum will include sessions on global climate governance, multilateral cooperation and sustainable development with insights from the ASEAN region, the Greater Mekong Subregion and CAREC. In the afternoon, discussions will shift to climate mitigation technologies, adaptation strategies and local resilience solutions. On the second day, participants will delve into climate finance, exploring multilateral financial systems, carbon subsidies and regional carbon markets. The day will conclude with a panel on think tank sustainability and growth, along with updates on the CAREC Think Tank Network’s progress and future initiatives.
With over 120 participants from CAREC think tanks, universities, governments, development partners, the private sector and the media, the forum will serve as a critical platform for advancing regional dialogue on climate issues. The event is supported by the Asian Development Bank, the People’s Republic of China Poverty Reduction and Regional Cooperation Fund, and the ADB-PRC Regional Knowledge Sharing Initiative (RKSI) which have all contributed significantly to the forum's diverse discussions.
