Uzbekistan Temir Yollari entered into a contract with CRRC Zhuzhou Locomotive, a Chinese locomotive manufacturer on August 15, to modernize and expand its locomotive fleet. This agreement follows the accords reached during President Shavkat Mirziyoyev’s recent visit to China.
The contract was signed by Zufar Narzullaev, Chairman of Uzbekistan Temir Yullari, and Wang Xiaolin, President of CRRC Zhuzhou Locomotive.
As part of the agreement, CRRC Zhuzhou Locomotive will modernize 12 electric locomotives currently in service. In addition, the company will supply Uzbekistan with 38 new locomotives, including freight, passenger, diesel, and shunting models. Payments for the new locomotives will be deferred until 2034.
Earlier, Daryo reported that Uzbekistan has initiated a project to purchase six high-speed electric trains with financial assistance from Korea Eximbank. The decree was adopted by Uzbek leader Shavkat Mirziyoyev on August 12 and came into force on August 14. The project is estimated to cost €220mn, with Uzbekistan contributing €21.3mn and Uzbekistan Temir Yollari, the national railway company, adding €13.5mn.
These developments align with the government’s broader efforts to revamp the railway system following the adoption of measures in October last year.
