The Asian Development Bank (ADB) has approved a $30mn grant aimed at improving maternal and child healthcare services in Tajikistan's Ayni, Dangara, and Darvoz districts.
ADB Director General for Central and West Asia, Yevgeniy Zhukov, noted, “Tajikistan has made significant strides in health over the past 20 years, with increased life expectancy and reduced maternal mortality rates. However, disparities in access to and quality of health care persist based on geography and socioeconomic status. ADB's support will address these disparities by enhancing health facilities and staff capacity in these key districts.”
The grant will fund the construction of a 40-bed maternity hospital in Ayni, an 80-bed maternity hospital in Dangara, and a 100-bed central district hospital in Darvoz. These facilities will incorporate climate-friendly features, including energy-efficient medical, heating, and cooling technologies. Additionally, a digital asset management system (OpenMEDIS) will be introduced for managing and maintaining medical equipment, with staff training provided for its operation.
To strengthen the delivery of integrated health services, the project will focus on improving the management and training of health workers, refining perinatal service tools and processes, and piloting case-based financing to enhance hospital financing mechanisms. Outreach programs will also be implemented to boost maternal and child health knowledge and encourage the use of health care services.
This initiative builds on the $32mn ADB grant approved in 2018 for the Maternal and Child Health Integrated Care project, which supports health improvements in the Fayzobod, Rasht, and Shamsiddin Shohin districts.
Since joining ADB in 1998, Tajikistan has received over $2.6bn in assistance from the bank, which includes more than $2bn in grants. ADB, established in 1966, is dedicated to promoting a prosperous, inclusive, resilient, and sustainable Asia and Pacific region, working towards the eradication of extreme poverty. The bank is owned by 68 members, with 49 from the region.
